Cougars Roll a 7!!
Last night the Cougars girls volleyball team rolled their perfect streak in the annual “Battle for the Spike” with rival Colonial to seven sweeping the Grenadiers 3-0. The girls came out on fire in the 1st set with great passing leading to a dominant offensive performance as they won 25-9. Junior Valentina Carvajel set the tone early with 4 explosive kills in the opening set. Seniors Maria Montalvo and Maya Caraballo did a great job as setters getting multiple Cougars involved on offense and keeping the Grenadiers off balance. The 2nd set saw the Grenadiers come out with some motivation after the first set loss and jump to a 10-6 lead before the Cougars rallied behind the serve of Senior Kaitlin Smith and Carolina Almeda. Almeda was great in all 3 games keeping the Cougars offense alive with 21 digs. Sophomore Lanna Sauls also helped rally the Cougars from the front line with 4 kills and 2 blocks that helped get the 25-18 UHS victory. The final set was more of the same for the Cougars, squashing another Colonial rally that tied it at 18 after the U was up 18-11. The Cougars finished with a 7-2 run using great backline defense again from Almeda and Sophomore Kyra Smith, more timely setting from Montalvo and Carabello and frontline attack from Senior Claire Simmons (4 kills in 3rd set) to take the 25-20 win and the “Spike” stays at the U for the 7th straight year.
For the match four different Cougars had 5+ kills and as a team UHS put down 14 aces. The overall team effort and energy was great and definitely helped to lead to the important district victory.
The Cougars next take the court on Thursday at home vs East River in another district battle. We hope you can come out and cheer on the Cougars!!
